Visapur Killa was constructed by the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, Balaji Vishwanath. It was built during 1713-1720 CE. Its history is closely linked to the history of Lohagad Fort which shares the same plateau with the Visapur Killa. Visapur was attacked by the British forces in the 17th century. The then Maratha ruler fought bravely but ultimately it was lost to the excessive arms and ammunitions brought by the British East India company in 1818 AD under the command of Colonel Prother. You can still find guns, huge cannons, and other war relics dating back to the Elizabethan reign within the periphery of the Visapur fort.

The Visapur fort is about 300 years old and has an ancient but timeless and elegant Marathi architecture and completely made out of granite rocks. There is also a well inside the fort premises and legend has it that the well was built by none other than the Pandavas, the legendary five brothers of Mahabharata. Everywhere in the fort, you’ll get to see patterns that resemble Lord Hanuman. The whole fort premises is filled with his idols and carvings.

There are many exciting and picturesque places to visit near Visapur forts such as Lohagad fort, Tung Fort, Valvan Dam, Bhaja Cave, Amrutanjan Point, Duke’s Nose, Karla Buddha Caves, Aadishakti Mata Ekvira  Devi Temple, Bhushi Lake, Pawna Lake, and Lonavala Lake. These scenic places make the Visapur fort trek an enamoring experience.

Visapur Killa was conquered by the British in 1818 and stands as a significant historical site. It was attacked by over 380 European and 800 native soldiers in 1818. Both the northern and southern gateways of the fort were blown up and nothing was left intact.  You can still find British guns and other war relics in the periphery of the fort. The fort relics still speak of the brutal history of a dark past. The old caves, as well as the fort, are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as monuments of national importance.

Visapur fort trek is a one-day trek of over 2 hours to the Visapur Killa from the base village. The Visapur fort is famous for its historical relics that date back to the Elizabethan era. Hence, Visapur fortis a perfect union of rich history and scenic beauty.
