Solo Travel to Kedarnath: My Journey, Safety Tips & Reflections

Mountains can calm a spirit like nothing else and run energy into the mind. When I made up my mind about going on a solo trip to Kedarnath, it wasn’t really about posting about a pilgrimage or photographs on social media.

I was in search of something that went beyond surface level: inner peace, motivation, and reconnection within myself.

It’s one thing to visit a place, but Kedarnath is on a different level as it is remotely located in the Garhwal Himalayas and sits at 11,755 ft. This place is religious for yoga practitioners as it revitalizes feelings of compassion, love, spirituality, and strength. Travelling solo? Now that is a decision that shifted my perspective entirely.

Below, I describe the entire trip from Mumbai to the Kedarnath temple, including all major stops along the way and trekking instructions.

Step 1: Mumbai to Haridwar

HikerWolf organizes an overnight train to Haridwar. Mumbai was the starting point of your spiritual and adventurous journey. Haridwar is a holy city famous for the Ganga Aarti and its peaceful ghats.

Step 2: Haridwar to Sonprayag

After spending a night relaxing at Haridwar, we will continue driving towards Sonprayag. The route contains stunning views of the mountains and has pit stops that are pleasing to the eye.

  • Distance: Roughly 250 km

  • Duration: 8 – 10 hours driving

  • Highlights: Devprayag (sangam of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi), Rudraprayag

Sonprayag is the ultimate location where one can drive in private cars. From this location, the only transport available are shared jeeps, which go to Gaurikund, the starting point for the Kedarnath trek.

Step 3: Halt at Guptkashi / Sitapur

Guptkashi or Sitapur, a picturesque town situated in the lap of the Himalayas, is where one usually halts for a night to calm the mind before the difficult trek in the following days.

  • Activities: Sightseeing, temple visits in the very early morning, registration for the Yatra if not completed earlier.

  • Accommodation: Comfortable hotels or lodges provided by HikerWolf.

Step 4: Trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath

The most awaited part of the journey is the trek to Kedarnath, starting from Gaurikund. This experience is challenging yet uplifting, as you encounter breathtaking views of the Himalayas, waterfalls, and hear spiritual tributes throughout your journey.

  • Trek Distance: 16–18 km one way

  • Duration: 6–10 hours

  • Key Stops: Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, Linchauli

  • Trek Route: Safe, well-paved with medical facilities and refreshment stalls

  • Mode Options: On foot, pony/mule, palki (doli), or by helicopter (from Sirsi/Phata)

Step 5: Arrival at Kedarnath

Kedarnath Temple is given the honor of housing Lord Shiva, and when the temple comes into view, one immediately feels the power.

Around Kedarnath Temple, you will find ancient shrines adorned with golden artistry with frosted mountain tops, as well as behind frozen lakes, which shall make you feel that everything was worth the combined effort put throughout the trekking.

Safety Tips for Solo Travelers

1. Health & Fitness

  • Before traveling, make sure to get a medical checkup.

  • Make sure to rest in the lower altitude areas like Sonprayag or Guptkashi for a day before starting the trek.

  • It’s important to drink enough water and carry glucose, ORS, and light energy bars.

2. Weather Awareness

  • Avoid traveling due to potential landslides during the monsoon season, July and August.

  • Bring a rain poncho or coat, and remember to dress in warm layers.

  • Trek in the mornings when the weather is more stable.

3. Communication

  • At greater altitudes, the mobile network becomes increasingly unreliable. BSNL has better reception closer to Kedarnath.

  • Let your family/friends know about your travel plans in advance.

4. Packing Essentials

  • Purchase high-quality waterproof trekking shoes.

  • Stock up on warm clothing like socks, gloves, thermals, a woolen sweater, a first aid kit, flashlight, power bank, government ID, and some cash, but be aware that there are limited ATMs.

  • Pack a reusable water bottle, light snacks, and utensils.

5. Accommodation

  • Dharamshalas and GMV lodges are located in Gaurikund, Sonprayag, and near the temple.

  • Make reservations in advance for peak seasons, which are May to June, and September to October.
