Trip To Arunachal Pradesh

Drive: ~230–250 km | 7–8 hours (via Rangapara/Balemu, ILP check en route)

Fly into Guwahati and begin the drive northeast into the mist-laced hills of West Kameng. Break for lunch at a local dhaba along the way. By evening, arrive in Shergaon and check into a heritage homestay run by a Sherdukpen family. Settle in before a warm, home-cooked dinner.

Overnight: Shergaon (homestay)

Drive: ~100 km | 3–3.5 hours

Start early with a hike to nearby farms and a waterfall — a great way to catch the village waking up before the trail crowds arrive. Spend the rest of the morning exploring Shergaon village and meeting the Sherdukpen community, one of Arunachal’s smaller and lesser-documented tribes.

After breakfast, drive to Dirang. On arrival, visit the Thupsung Dhargyeling Monastery, perched above the Dirang valley. Evening at leisure.

Overnight: Dirang (hotel/homestay)

Drive: ~15 km each way | approx. 30–40 minutes

After breakfast, head out to Sangti Valley, a quiet stretch of meadows and pine-fringed river along the eastern Himalayan slopes. Take a leisurely village walk through the Monpa hamlets that dot the valley — wooden farmhouses, grazing horses and yaks, and orchards heavy with apple, kiwi, and apricot depending on the season. Stop by the Sangti Sheep Breeding Farm a little further up the valley.

Lunch is laid out riverside or at a local homestay, sourced straight from the surrounding farms. In the afternoon, there’s time for a gentle riverside picnic, a short trek along the valley trails, or simply sitting by the Sangti river with a book. Return to Dirang by late afternoon; evening at leisure.

Drive: ~140 km | 5–6 hours (with stops)

Checkout after breakfast and set off toward Tawang. The drive is the scenic centrepiece of the trip: cross Sela Pass (13,700 ft), pause at the still, snow-ringed Sela Lake, stop by Nuranang (Jang) Falls for photos, and pay respects at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial, dedicated to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 1962 Indo-China war.

Arrive in Tawang, check in, and rest. In the evening, attend the light and sound show at the Tawang War Memorial, which recounts the 1962 war through the lens of the soldiers who defended this frontier. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Overnight: Tawang

Drive: ~37 km one-way to Bum La | approx. 2 hours each way

A full day excursion toward Bum La Pass (15,200 ft), the historic trading route into Tibet and now a closely-guarded stretch of the Indo-China border, along with a stop at the strikingly emerald Sangetsar Tso, better known as Madhuri Lake after the Bollywood film shot on its shores.

Note: Bum La access needs a defence permit arranged in advance and is weather-dependent; if it isn’t issued or the road is closed, we substitute a day excursion to Kitpi village instead, keeping the day equally rewarding. Return to Tawang by evening.

Overnight: Tawang

Drive: ~175 km | 5.5–6 hours

After breakfast, check out and visit Tawang Monastery — the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Spend time in its 400-year-old prayer halls and the small museum.

Before beginning the drive to Bomdila, visit the birthplace of the 6TH Dalai Lama. On arrival, unwind at your own pace — a café, a walk through the local market, or simply watching the light change over the Bomdila hills.

If time permits, we will stop by at the Bomdila View Point.

Note: This is a long driving day, so treat it as a “moving rest day” — the itinerary deliberately leaves the evening open rather than stacking in more sightseeing.

Drive: ~200–210 km | 5–6 hours

After breakfast, checkout and visit the Bomdila Monastery and the Lower Goenpa. If time permits, take a brief stroll in the beautiful emporium market of this hill town.

Hereafter, descend from the mountains into the plains of Assam, arriving at Kaziranga National Park — home to two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros population.

Check into your hotel/resort. In the evening, catch a cultural show near the park showcasing Assamese and tribal folk performances.

Overnight: Kaziranga

Drive: ~190 km | 4–5 hours (Kaziranga to Guwahati Airport)

Early morning jeep safari into the Western or Central Range of Kaziranga National Park — prime hours for rhino, wild buffalo, and (with luck) elephant sightings.

Return for breakfast and checkout, then drive to Guwahati.

Upon arrival, check into the hotel and relax for the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in Guwahati.

After breakfast, we will check out and head for our onward journey with beautiful memories from the Eastern Himalayas.
