Be it the mundane and monotonous career or the city blues, Pangong lake’s blue brilliance is all it takes to transport any visitor to an enchanting world and give you a much-needed respite. Located about 160 kilometers from Leh, the drive to this mesmerizing lake is an experience to cherish. The architectural beauty in the quaint monasteries on the sides, the air thick with juniper smoke, and the symphonic prayers audible from a distance all add to the sanctitude of the place. The towering mountains on the way and the mysterious mirage effect- a ten-minute crossing requiring an hour-long drive all leaves you spellbound if nothing else.
The word Pangong is derived from a Tibetan word meaning enchanted. That’s exactly what this lake is all about “enchanting, captivating and charming”. The brilliant blue of this beautiful lake changes to shades of green and grey as the sun approaches his final moments of the day. The calmness and serenity oozing out of Pangong is a stark contrast to the surrounding. Pangong runs along the tensed Indo-China border, where there are massive cantonments to counter any breaches from either side. It’s almost as if God had made Pangong a healing, for the disease man had created in the first place.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Pangong lake offers a lot to its visitors. The ethereal and therapeutic effect when you sit at the shore with sand under your feet, the gentle winds brushing against your face, and the sweet burbles of the water playing a symphony on its own, all makes it worthwhile to make the trip. A space for contemplation as you see the depth of your nature. As you stare into the depths of this scenic beauty it all becomes a humbling experience.
CAMPING AT PANGONG LAKE
Camping is the best part of the Pangong lake. Placing a bonfire and having a barbecue while immersed in the beauty around can be an enthralling experience. While going out, leaving the warmth of the tent although can be a bit treacherous, the view can leave anyone awestruck. Laying on the ground with a thousand stars gleaming above your head with the gentle breeze gives a feeling of oneness. This feeling of the skies and universe immersing in you is certainly something to live for. Sipping hot chai as you see the sun makes his first appearance far across the horizon, ushering the light can be rejuvenating. The beautiful sunsets as the sun bids farewell with all his might and glory spreading orange across the skies exemplify the panache exuberating out of this iconic spot.
The chirpings of the beautiful migratory birds and the view of marmots wriggling out of their burrows and the beauty of the lake in itself, all make it a paradise for the shutterbugs. However, the main attraction for me is the ice-cold dip in this calm and soothing lake. The chills you get thoroughly shakes you up and in one way or the other and rekindles something inside you. The dip might not be the faint-hearted but if it’s in you, it’s undoubtedly an experience of a lifetime.
So pack your bags and head to this iconic spot at the first opportunity. The calm waters, the beautiful sunset, and the picturesque setting is all a feast for the beholder. These are the experiences to be experienced. According to the famous writer Munia Khan, peace of mind oozes out from the serenity of a lake. What are you waiting for? Pangong is calling.
